SCUBA is an acronym for a piece of gear, but to a scuba diver it means so much more. It means unparalleled adventure diving with sharks, hanging out with sea turtles, or finding yourself surrounded by a giant school of fish. It even means diving on a Great Lakes shipwreck for an exciting view into history. While most people's world ends at the shoreline, being a scuba diver means you have amazing access to see the world beneath the waves!

Learn to scuba dive with Water Sports and be ready to hit the water as soon as your plane lands!
Who can take this course?
To enroll in the PADI Open Water Diver course you must be 10 years old or older. You need adequate swimming skills and need to be in good physical health. No prior experience with scuba diving is required.
To become an Open Water Diver you need to do the Academic & Pool Training (Course), and Open Water Training (Certification).
Academic & Pool Training (i.e. Course)
The online PADI eLearning program is designed so that you can learn at your own pace when it is convenient for you. The course includes lots of photos, audio and video tutorials, and multiple choice quizzes. You'll learn about things like water pressure, buoyancy, and types of scuba gear. After the PADI eLearning course you'll visit Water Sports in person for the Quick Review where you'll practise setting up your gear and write your final exam.
In the pool training you'll learn about finning, getting water out of your mask, buoyancy control, and safety skills like sharing air. Our instructors and divemasters will be in the water with you the whole time to demonstrate the skills and help you get comfortable doing them. Surprisingly, not all dive centers will have their instructors and divemasters in the water with you to properly teach you these skills.
You can complete your Academic & Pool Training with Water Sports throughout the year. You can learn how to sign up and check out our course schedule.
Open Water Training (i.e. Certification)
After your course you'll be ready to hit the open water! But, before we can let you loose on the world's lakes and oceans, you need to hone your skills in a real-world environment. Some skills aren't very realistic in a pool so you'll learn them to their full effect in a lake, or ocean. There are 4 or 5 dives in all and once you're done you're certified!
